The GES DISC is a noted oceanographic data archive, particularly for data pertaining to the biology of the oceans and interaction between the physical dynamics of the ocean and biological systems. Data products from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS), the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are contained in the archive.
MODIS-Terra and MODIS-Aqua data includes very accurate sea surface temperature (SST) data. SST is a fundamental variable that researchers use to observe and understand the constantly changing patterns of circulation in the world's oceans. The interaction between currents and living organisms creates the multiple intertwined patterns of chlorophyll that are perceived by Ocean Color sensors.
