Introduction

Sponsor

The distribution of these data sets is funded by NASA's Earth Science Enterprise. The data are not copyrighted; however, we request that when you publish data or results using these data, please acknowledge as follows:

The authors wish to thank Dr. Andrew Heymsfield, Senior Scientist, MMM Division, NCAR, Boulder, Colorado for the production of these data and the Distributed Active Archive Center(Code 610.2) at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, 20771, which archives and distributes them under sponsorship of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise.

The Data

Characteristics

Three files have been created from data collected by the 2dc and HVPS probes aboard the UND Citation during KWAJEX.

DATA CHARACTERISTICS
DataContentsDescription
2dc concentration spectra1 Hz concentration spectra There are 28 size bins with a diameter range from 32 to 4000 microns. A reconstruction technique was used for partial images.
HVPS concentration spectra1 Hz concentration spectraThere are 65 size bins with a diameter range from 192 to 25000 microns.
2dc + HVPS composite spectra1 Hz concentration spectraThe spectra are merged versions of files 1 and 2. A flexible merging point was used to make a smooth transition, but it was usually in the range from 800 to 1000 microns (e.g. 2dc from 32-800 microns, then HVPS from 800 to 15000 microns). There are 50 size bins with a diameter range from 32 to 15000 microns.

The Files

Naming Conventions

ASCII Files. The naming convention for the ascii data files is:

yyyymmddhhmm_kwajex_cit_leg[filetype]_#ofRecords

The date and time refer to the start of the flight.

Image Files. Images from the 2dc have been stored in separate .gif files. The naming convention for the image files is:

mmddyyyy_hhmmss.gif,

which indicates the start time.

Data
ColParameter
1-6Date and time. Files that cross midnight will contain the same date, but have a time past 23:59:59. (e.g. 25:13:00 = 01:13:00)
7-8Latitude and longitude (degrees)
9Altitude (meters)
10True air speed (meters/second)
11Pressure (millibars)
12-13Temperature and dewpoint (C)
14Total concentration (#/m^3). The total particle concentration measured by the probe(s). The first bin of the 2dc (32-64 microns) is not used due to noisiness.
15-*The concentration for each bin. These are normalized by bin width (#/m^3/m).
Bad data value: -999.99
  • Some basic data about the aircraft's position and environment have been added for convenience.
gzip
ImageGIF Every 10th image buffer recorded by the 2dc is shown (5 buffers per .gif file.) The start time of each buffer is indicated on the image. A complete set of images for any time period is available on request.tar
