Dear TOGA COARE Participant:
Enclosed are satellite images with flight tracks for 15 of the NASA flights in TOGA COARE. The flight tracks are imposed on GMS satellite images at approximately the mid point of each flight. All times and dates are UTC. These images are a supplement to the NASA TOGA COARE Mission Summaries issued by R. Kakar of NASA Headquarters. They show the relationship of the clouds to the DC-8 and ER-2 flights.

Also enclosed are digital copies of these images on two diskettes. The images are in GIF format. Software for reading the images are included on Diskette 2. For reading the images, I suggest that you make a sub directory on your computer and copy the entire contents of both diskettes into it.

For viewing on DOS computers, type CSHOW. Menus will display the image files. They are labelled with suffix .GIF. The other files are for the GIF viewing software. There is a wide variety of different display monitors used in DOS environments. The second level of the menu asks which type of monitor you have and what form of display you want. The images are all 640 X 480 X 256. However, using this display on a VGA monitor will cause some of the lettering to be broken because parts of the image have to be hidden from view. VGA cards can only handle 640 X 480 X 16. Sampling of pixels is used because of the limits of memory space on the cards. The full graphics can be seen with the 640 X 480 X 16 choice (number 9) but some of the contrast will be sacrificed. Both the full graphics and contrast can be viewed for limited portions of the images if smaller displays such as the 360 X 480 X 256 option (character [) are selected. Use the arrow keys to roam around the image.

To use CSHOW, all of the contents of Diskette 2 have to be copied. It uses all of the non-GIF files.

For OS-2 systems, use VIEWGIF. Its easier to use.

I assumed that all Unix users already have a GIF viewer so none has been included.

If you have any questions or problems, contact me at the numbers below. I can provide McIDAS area formatted images if you have a McIDAS or Unidata system.

Good Luck,

Don Wylie
